Ah yes, the world of Webkinz! I know both my children are in love with these little plush toys that they register on the internet and play in the Webkinz world. I thought this would make a cute gift idea for my niece who is turning 3! I think I am safe to post today because she is probably busy with party prep and won't look at my blog today. (crossing fingers). I have seen some fabric baskets around so I went with this idea and varied it a little to create a childs' size purse.
Anyway, I wanted to share some of my tips with fabric stamping. I have recently found that the Making Memories acrylic paints are wonderful for this! I have tried A LOT of different paint/ink for these techniques and they all kind of serve different purposes. If you want fine detail...then ink is probably the way to go. For this project I wanted to match the bold fabric design (Michael Miller Fabric) so I needed a paint that would have the opacity to cover the fabric.
This means that the paint is less "see through" than others. For example, take a look at my apple square. Notice how I stamped a lighter pink on top of the dark green? The pink has enough opacity that you don't see the green through it.
Here is a shot of some of the supplies I used. For my stamped panels I just cut some small squares of cotton fabric (choose a high thread count fabric). The little foam brushes you can find at the craft/dollar stores. I pull out one for each color I am using, then I don't have to go and rinse brushes in between stamping.
I am using some images from the KIM HUGHES COLLECTION, mainly from her "sweet thang" set. Paint IS NOT precise so you need a stamp that is DEEPLY ETCHED so that the extra paint on the edges and such don't end up on your project. Be liberal with your paint application.
Here is a shot of all my little panels stamped.Do you see the endless possibilities on customizing a gift? Sure the project would be cute just with the printed fabric, but that personal WOW touch is created with making it totally unique by stamping!
I then lay out all my squares and come up with a configuration that I like.
One of the many tricks of quilting that I have learned is by using fabric glue. The glue is set by just a quick press of the iron.The benefit you ask???
Your fabric will not shift as you sew! This is so handy when you are trying to line up squares and seams!
Here is a quick close glimpse of my squares stitched together. I can't wait to give this to my niece today....she is a girly girl, so I think she will be pleased....

I love this! I just recently pulled out my sewing machine after YEARs of being in the closet just so I could sew on cards...maybe I should start sewing on fabric, too!! My daughter just got that cute white seal for her 6th birthday last weekend. We named her "Whiskers" because of the wild black whiskers that stand out so much on the white animal...apparently our seals must be cousins...the crazy whiskers must run in the family!! LOl By the way, it was my daughter's 12th Webkinz!!
