More Stamping and Sewing Tutorial

The past few weeks I have really had fun sewing and stamping together. Some of the projects I can't show you, as they are coming out in magazines....but I did up a quick set of coasters this morning to show you some cool things you can do!
You can purchase these fun fabric swatches (charm size) from most quilting shops for CHEAP! I use these like I would patterned paper. They are excellent for color inspiration and they are great because they are already cut to the perfect size for coasters!
For the center detail that I will stamp on, I thought I would share something very COOL....You can run fabric and batting through the cuttlebug with the nestabilities!!!!!!
No need to try and cut out a perfect oval using a pattern piece. Just run it through and it comes out perfect! I was unsure whether it would work with my cotton batting....but sure enough it works!!!! (can you tell I'm a little excited about this....think of the shape possibilities!)
Here are the swatches I decided to go with and the oval fabric and batting cut out.
I used Kim Hughes Bloomin' Beautiful set from Cornish Heritage Farms for the stamping. I thought the whimsy of this set was a perfect match with my fabric swatches!
I used pigment ink (I find palette is a little dull, so this works really well). Make sure you heat set the ink with your iron after your stamping. This will make the ink permanent and you can wash the coasters when they get dirty.
I laid my stamped fabric on my batting oval and pinned it to my fabric swatch (centered).
With a zig zag stitch I went around the outside edge to prevent fraying and also to secure it to my coaster front.
I then stitched front and back swatches together (right sides together) and left a small opening so I could turn it right side out. After turning right side out I did a final stitch all the way around the edge so my coaster would sit nice and flat and look finished. These literally took me an hour....start to finish.
All done! Now wouldn't these make a lovely hostess gift for a special occasion? They do make me smile just looking at them. So colorful and fun!
Here are the supply deets:
Stamps:
Bloomin' Beautiful, Script Sentiments (Cornish Heritage Farms)
Ink:
red, pink pigment ink (Fresh Ink)
green pigment ink (Colorbox)
Fabric:
Moda fabric, cotton batting
Accessories:
Sewing machine, cuttlebug, nestabilities

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi-

I was just wondering how you prevent the ink from smearing when heating? Do you have to cover it with a cloth of sorts so it won't get on the iron? I am confused and a beginner..sorry for the questions!
